Striking without warning, the waves of the Indian Ocean tsunami wiped out entire villages -- wreaking untold emotional and psychological trauma. One Great Hour of Sharing funds helped meet the demand for basic needs such as water, sanitation, and food in the emergency phase immediately following the disaster. Yet the long-term psychological effects of such a catastrophe must be addressed as well.

Reaching out to women and children, often especially hard-hit when disaster strikes, OGHS supported psychosocial recovery work and child development programs are helping ensure that the healing process can begin. With recreational materials and activities, therapeutic play, and 36 newly-build community centers, children are regaining the security and normalcy they need in order to thrive.
