Tito Recalde is an elected leader of Toba Qum, a small indigenous community in Paraguay, working to maintain his people’s cultural heritage. “I fear the loss of our culture,” says Tito. “We are forgetting who we are.” With the creation of a bilingual school, Tito hopes to reverse that trend while developing a more solid economic base. He has recruited elders of the village to teach the children the songs and dances of their people--working to preserve the community’s culture for future generations. Through the Chaco Initiative, OGHS is helping to support such efforts.
